The benefits of home cooking

It can save you money

Processed food and take-outs can cost you considerably more than a home cooked meal. Cooking using seasonal locally sourced ingredients, reducing your meat and fish intake and eating more vegetables, lentils, pulses, beans, grains etc. can also drastically reduce your food bill.

Today’s leftovers can also be tomorrow’s lunch. For instance, if you have some mashed potato and vegetables left over, why not make some tasty fish cakes. Start by mashing the vegetables together. Drain a tin of tuna and with a fork, mix the tuna into the veg. Take a handful of the mixture and roll between your palms to form a tennis size ball. Flatten between your palms, toss in breadcrumbs and lay the fish cakes on a non-stick baking tray. Cook in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. Serve with a lovely fresh dressed green salad. It’s healthier

Home cooking is a much healthier choice as it allows you to choose and control the ingredients you put into your dishes. Processed foods contain higher levels of sodium, salt, fats and sugar to make them taste better – traffic light labelling tells you what’s in the food you eat. By cooking from scratch you can control exactly what goes into your food and you have the opportunity to prepare a balanced diet for the whole family.

Cooking at home also allows you to control portion sizes and prevent overeating. The choices you make can keep you and your family healthy and help prevent weight gain, digestive troubles and allergic reactions.

You can make balanced meals

Taking time to plan your weekly menu not only helps to save time and money but also provides a way to create meals with a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, plus all the essential vitamins and minerals needed by an adult and child. When eating balanced meals your body feels satisfied and you have fewer cravings – so less snacking!
